Views by Richard H. Kern. From Lorenzo Sitgreaves's Report of an Expedition down the Zuni and Colorado Rivers. Washington: GPO, 1854; printer Beverley Tucker. Tinted lithographs by Ackerman. Ca 4 1/2 x 7 1/2. Very good condition, though with some chipping in margins.
Captain Lorenzo Sitgreaves was assigned to explore the relatively unknown desert region west of Albuquerque, along the Zuni and Colorado Rivers. His 1851 expedition, with surveyors, scientists, and a military escort, traveled across Arizona to Fort Yuma and San Diego. Sitgreaves report included extensive scientific appendixes. The views and natural history plates were drawn by Richard Kern. Kern was very interested in the Indians of the region and he made excellent drawings of their lives and culture.
