American made maps from before 1800 are extremely rare and very desirable; the maps from this series are among the most sought after of the original American states. Philadelphia engraver and publisher Joseph T. Scott was, along with fellow Philadelphian Mathew Carey, one of the first American cartographic publishers. His important United States Gazetteer included a map of the United States and separate maps of all the states. As noted in Wheat & Brun's Maps and Charts Published In America Before 1800: A Bibliography, these maps are among the earliest mappings of each state, and they are all fascinating in the quite accurate information presented. These are prime maps from the nascent days of American cartography.
