Emily Sartain engraved fewer prints than her brothers and far less than her father. Her output, however, shows that she retained the family skill at printmaking.

Emily Sartain. “Prudence Knapp Horton.” Engraving by Emily Sartain. Ca. 1876. Oval, ca. 4 1/2 x 3 5/8. Very good condition.

Prudence Knapp Horton (1787-1880) was born in Yorktown, New York, daughter of Enoch Knapp and Esther Wright. In 1807 she married Isaac Horton (1780-1855) and together they raised ten children in Colchester and Liberty, New York. Likely this engraving was made in 1876, when the Horton family had a gathering in conjunction with the Centennial celebration in Philadelphia that year. Given Prudence's advanced age in 1876, the portrait was probably taken from a photograph brought to the reunion in her stead.

This portrait was engraved by Emily Sartain, daughter of John Sartain and sister of William and Samuel. Emily served as principal of the Philadelphia School of Design for Women for 33 years, from 1886 until 1919. $110
