Fort Pickens
Mrs. Lieutenant Gilman. "Fort Pickens, Pensacola Harbor, Florida-Looking Seaward. Fort M'Rae in the Distance." From Harper's Weekly. New York, February 23, 1861. 9 1/4 x 13 3/4.

When he received word that troops from Florida and Alabama were gathering to take over the U.S. forts around Pensacola Bay, Lieutenant Adam J. Slemmer, who was acting commander of the small federal garrison there, consolidated his troops in Fort Pickens. Soon he was reinforced by troops from the North, and because of his foresight, Slemmer enabled the Union to maintain its position in Florida throughout the war. $40
