Except as noted, all of the following original antique prints:

Bartholdi Statue, Liberty Enlightening the World “THE GREAT BARTHOLDI STATUE, LIBERTY ENLIGHTENING THE WORLD.” New York: Currier & Ives, 1885. Chromolithograph. 27 x 21 (image) with 2 3/4” of text below and full margins. Expertly repaired cut across center. Extraordinarily bright copy in condition as close to mint as possible. Framed to museum specifications.

This print is the most famous of the many in which artists, contemporary with the completion of the Statue of Liberty, used to license to turn the statue so that Manhattan Island would be conveniently squared behind it. Jersey City is to the left and Brooklyn is to the right. The North and East rivers are filled with a great many ships.

The text tells the viewer that the statue is a “Gift of France to the American People,” and states that it was “erected on Bedloe’s Island, New York Harbor.” This latter statement differentiates this image from a previous state printed in 1884 which read, “To be erected.” (See, Peters, Currier & Ives, 3999a). Peters did not record this printing, but we are probably documenting Conningham/Searjeant Currier & Ives Prints, item 2574A. After the word “Harbor,” there are two additional lines reading, “The statue is of copper-bronzed, 148 ft. in height, and is to be mounted on a stone pedestal 150 ft. high; making the extreme height 298 ft. The torch will display a powerful electric / light, and the statue thus present by night as by day, an exceedingly grand and imposing appearance.” This copy is probably a state between those reading “erected” and those stated “to be erected” since the main title suggests completion while the explanation still speculates on the future. The six sites keyed are: Jersey City, N.J., Hudson or North River, New York City, Castle Garden, East River, and Brooklyn. A spectacular print of one of America’s greatest views by America’s most famous print makers. $6,500
