Late 19th century fashion plates from lady's magazines. Ca 8 x 11. Engravings. Original hand color. With centerfolds and narrow margins as issued. Generally very good condition, but with some minor condition issues as illustrated in pictures. Godey's Lady's Book and Peterson's Magazine were but two of the popular lady's publications issued in the post Civil War era. These contained articles of interest to "ladies" of the day, poems, inspirational engravings, and most popularly, fold-out and hand-colored engravings showing the latest fashions from Paris or New York. These are likely the source of the expression that someone is a real "fashion plate."

Early 20th century fashion plates from La Gazette du Bon Ton. Paris: Lucien Vogel, July 1914. Ca 7 x 5 1/2. Lithographs. Very good condition. A series of enticing portrayals of early twentieth century high fashion designs by renowned French designers. The Gazette du Bon Ton was the preeminent fashion magazine of the early twentieth century, each issue containing wonderful plates showing elegantly dressed models in the latest fashions. These were continued to run even during World War II, as attested by these lovely uncolored plates from the July 1914 issue. These prints were on the cutting edge of the art deco tradition in which flowing and form fitting outfits replaced full skirts and bustles. $55 each
