Maps by Mathew Carey. From American Pocket Atlas. Philadelphia: M. Carey, 1801 and 1805. Engravings. Very good condition, except as noted.
An excellent series of maps from the second and third editions of Carey's important atlas. Carey, an Irish immigrant, set up an elaborate cottage system of craftsmen for engraving, printing, and coloring his maps, utilizing the best independent artists directed to a common end. Carey is important, then, not only for the excellent maps he produced, but for his setting the pattern for American map publishing, to be followed by the likes of John Melish and Henry S. Tanner.
The Pocket Atlas contained 20 small folding maps (19 in the 1801 edition) of the different states and territories in the United States. As Carey was the leading American cartographic publisher and as he was located in the center of cartographic knowledge in the United States, Carey's maps contain the most accurate and detailed information on the country. Carey updated his maps for each edition of his atlas, and in these editions he added roads, as well as new names and towns. The maps in these editions contain as current depictions of the American states and territories as were available at the beginning of the nineteenth century and are wonderful historic documents of the period.
