A series of finely engraved maps of the American Revolution from an early 19th century series on the life of George Washington. Jared Sparks (1789-1866) was a graduate of Harvard and studied theology at Harvard Divinity School. He was a Unitarian minister from 1819 to 1829 and later became editor of the publication North American Review. Sparks' great interest was to write a full history of the American Revolution and began in 1824 working on an edition of George Washington's writings. The result was a twelve volume work The Writings of George Washington which was published between 1834 and 1837. Sparks wrote and published several other multivolume works including, The Life of Gouverneur Morris (1832), The Works of Benjamin Franklin (1836-1840), and The Library of American Biography (1834-1838), and The Diplomatic Correspondence of the American Revolution (1829-1830). His books were well received and he taught the subject of the American Revolution at Harvard. In 1849, Sparks was elected president of Harvard, but resigned a few years later due to the monotonous administrative duties of the office. All of these maps were engraved by George W. Boynton who was Boston’s leading engraver in the mid 19th century. He engraved maps for some of the most important American atlases of the period by Bradford, Goodrich, Tanner and others.
All maps are $45 unless otherwise noted.
